North Captiva Island: The Beach

The Beach at North Captiva Island was unlinke anything I had ever experienced. It reminded us of the beach from Castaway.  There were several days where we had the ENTIRE beach to ourselves! It is not touristy AT all. Since it is not touristy, it is not combed every night like the beaches in Destin or on major resorts...Therefore, they are not pristine and clean in the sense that there is seaweed from the tide, shells, etc. It is a natural beach and we loved it!

The I "Heart" List: Shells. Long walks on the beach. Floating in the ocean. Attempting cheerleading stunts with Katy in the water. Handstand contests. My playlist: Maroon 5, Adele, and Florence & The Machine. Quiet crashing waves. Peace. Wind in my hair. Baby crabs. Relaxing with no plans. Feeling the sun on my skin. Taking naps. The feeling of my feet under the sand. The sound of laughter as Logan/ my sister read Bossypants.

Parlez-vous français?

Do I know French? Non. (well, I know that word)

How am I going to learn?
  • Rosetta Stone - I have it and have worked through Level 1 (still need to purchase 2 & 3)
  • Local University in Egletons - My BIL (Nolan) and I are going to attend the local University in town to take French lessons
  • FRENCH MOVIES...remember that tradition we started a few months ago? I love watching French movies w/ English subtitles.  It has made me really familiar with the sound of the language.  (AND I love French Music - Edith Piaf is magical)
  • Immersion - the best way to learn a language is to LIVE it. I am going to try my hardest to not lean on Logan as a crutch since he is completely bilingual.

It is a HUGELY daunting task for an adult... my neices picked it up in a matter of months with their under 6 year old brains... But I am really excited and ready to take on the challenge.  If only I would have known how my life would end up, I would have bypassed Spanish and taken French in high school.  Oh well!

Note: In Paris, majority of people speak English. It is very easy to get around that town as an English speaker.  Now Egletons is tougher... b/c its in Central France in a small town. I think this will be beneficial and frustrating at the same time. Good in learning the language, bad in the "making friends" department.

The BIG Debate: Store vs. Ship vs. Sell

Basically, after doing quite  a bit of research, we landed on storing ALL of our stuff.

Why?

1. Logan's brother Kristin packed up their house and moved to France for a cool, $10,000.  UM- all that we own doesn't even add up to that amount of money, so we were thankful to learn from her!

2. I went through a weekend of wanting to sell EVERYTHING and start fresh and new since its a brand new adventure.  Let go of the past, drink in the future.... but then I had a meltdown followed by a panic attack.  The whole free spirit battle lost in this instance and practicality and emotional attachment won.  It was too much for me to process- moving AND selling everything we own.  So... we aren't putting that pressure on ourselves.

3. We just got married under 2 years ago.  We will NEVER get to register again.  If we were to move back, there is no way I would be able to afford Crate & Barrel anything! Therefore, its important to hold onto all those nice wedding gifts.

4.  Packing - We are packing clothes only with a few small meaningful items- pictures, photo albums, books, etc.  Logan said I have 3x the wardrobe of an average French girl... He is appalled at all my clothes haha! So I think I can for sure purge through some of those and hang onto my absolute favorites, classic silhouettes, basics, and fun accessories. We have 4 suitcases total to bring over on our international flight... so that should be interesting to sift through!

5. Our place is furnished.  Although none of it is my taste, we will not be sleeping on the floor the first night and sitting on the ground for meals.  That being said, re-doing our home is going to be a little fun project of mine. I have become extremely passionate about redoing furniture, so I am looking forward to some French flea market finds!

Have we started packing yet? HAHAHAHHAH... um, NO! Oops? We will start that next week when we no longer have to work! Much more time to run errands & see family and friends!

North Captiva Island: The Sunsets

These pictures were all taken from the rooftop of the Compass Rose.  They are in NO way edited, photoshopped, or anything... How Great is our God? He is the Master Creator, Artist, Lover of all that is beautiful. I love how each night the sunset was breathtaking, yet different from the night before.  Imagine how incredibly beautiful Heaven will be someday.  Glad we got a small taste of it from a rooftop in Florida.  Enjoy :)

Wonderful Maker - Chris Tomlin

You spread out the skies over empty space
Said "let there be light"
Into a dark and formless world Your light
was born

You spread out Your arms over empty hearts
Said "let there be light"
Into a dark and hopeless world Your Son
was born

You made the world and saw that it was good
You sent Your only son for You are good

What a wonderful Maker
What a wonderful Savior
How majestic Your whispers
And how humble Your love

With a strength like no other
And the heart of a Father
How majestic Your whispers
What a wonderful God
